Wynberg Grey Sport and Cultural Weekend 2025

There was an air of excitement on Thursday, 08 May 2025, morning as the boys gathered, said their goodbyes to parents, and boarded the buses bound for Gqeberha. Although our departure was slightly delayed, we made good time on the road and arrived as scheduled. Within the hour, the boys were warmly welcomed by their host families, while our chess team was swiftly whisked away to compete in their first match. With little time to settle in, the players showed great resilience and represented the school with pride.

On Friday, 09 May 2025, our Cross Country runners, squash players, and hockey teams were all in action. The boys rose to the occasion, testing their skills and sportsmanship against strong opposition from Grey Junior School. They embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. That evening, the concert band took the stage, delivering a performance that was both polished and heartfelt. It was a true pleasure to hear them perform, and their music brought a fitting close to a lively and fulfilling day!

Rugby capped off the Grey Weekend with an eventful morning. The competitive edge was certainly witnessed in a number of the fixtures, with us winning 3 games across the board. The three wins came from the U12A, U12B & U12C teams. This bodes well for the visit of Grey in 2026. The U13A match was certainly a highlight of the day, as the match was end to end in a “test match” like atmosphere. The rugby boys certainly did us proud yet again and a huge thank you must go out to each and every one who participated.

We departed Gqeberha for Cape Town early on Sunday morning and arrived back at school right on schedule at 16h15. For many of the boys, this was a first-time experience, travelling to Grey Junior and staying with host families. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Interestingly, several boys who stayed with their own parents this year have already expressed a desire to be hosted next time!

Thank You
A heartfelt thank you goes to Grey Junior School for their warm hospitality and to all the host families who took such wonderful care of our boys. We are also deeply grateful to our dedicated staff who gave up their family time to support and supervise the boys throughout the trip.

We look forward to returning the favour when we host Grey Junior School in Cape Town in 2026!
