From Cawood Fields to the Green and Gold: Congratulations to Old Boy Zachary Porthen

Wynberg Boys’ Junior School proudly congratulates Old Boy, 2017 Prefect and U13A Rugby Captain, Zachary Porthen, on his first Springbok call-up.

Former Junior Springbok prop and captain, Porthen has been named in Rassie Erasmus’s 36-man squad for the Castle Lager Outgoing Tour in November. The tour will see the Springboks face off against top-tier international opposition and Zachary currently the only uncapped player in the squad will join the team after his commitments with the DHL Stormers, where he made his Vodacom United Rugby Championship debut in May.

Zachary’s selection marks another significant milestone in his already impressive rugby journey. Currently on tour with the Stormers in Italy, his inclusion in the national squad is a testament to his dedication, perseverance and passion for the game.

Reflecting on Zachary’s early years, Mr Marc Sabatta, his former WBJS coach and Head of Rugby shared:

“I remember picking Zachary to play U13A while he was still U12 in 2016, and it was evident then already that he had a massive future in the game. When coaching him in 2017 as part of a very strong U13A side, Zachary was a pleasure to coach. His work ethic was that of a young man who wanted to excel in the sport, and it is no surprise to see him playing at the highest possible level. I wish Zachary everything of the best and will be waiting with anticipation to see him make his Springbok debut! Seeing him on that touring squad list has made me a very proud coach!”

Wynberg Boys’ Junior School celebrates this incredible achievement with immense pride. Zachary’s journey from Cawood Fields to the Springbok green and gold is an inspiration to every young Wynberg boy a shining example of where hard work, humility and passion can lead.

Congratulations, Zachary! Once a Wynberg boy, always a Wynberg boy.
