WBJS Goes Live with SMILE 90.4FM to Launch 185th Celebration

Wynberg Boys’ Junior School officially kicked off its 185th birthday celebrations in an unforgettable style with a live Outside Broadcast from Smile 90.4FM on Friday, 20 February 2026.

Before the sun had risen, the Smile FM team were already setting up at the Jan Oosthuizen Pavilion and the A-field, transforming the school grounds into a vibrant live broadcast hub. From 06h00 to 09h00, the energy of the Ryan O’Connor Breakfast Show echoed across Wynberg, as the WBJS community proudly showcased 185 years of excellence, brotherhood and spirit.

Parents arrived early to share the moment with their sons, enjoying coffee and breakfast from Vida E Caffe Kenilworth while soaking up the electric atmosphere. The campus buzzed with excitement as learners gathered, filling the air with excitement, laughter and the unmistakable Wynberg Gees.

Throughout the broadcast, interviews highlighted what makes WBJS such a special place. Mr Poleman reflected on the significance of reaching the 185-year milestone, celebrating the rich heritage of a school founded in 1841, while also looking ahead to a future built on innovation and strong values. Learners confidently took to the microphone, sharing their pride in their school, their favourite subjects and sports. Mr Gerber and Mr Sabatta brought light to our school’s continued efforts to raise funds for the Red Cross Children’s Trust S11 Project.

Music played a central role in the morning’s festivities, with the Concert Band adding rhythm and vibrancy to the programme. At one memorable moment, the entire school joined together in singing the school song, a powerful reminder of the unity and brotherhood that define the Wynberg experience.

Adding to the excitement was a spirited staff Tug of War challenge, which drew enthusiastic cheers from boys and parents alike. It was a fitting display of camaraderie and fun.

The live broadcast not only amplified the voice of Wynberg Boys’ Junior School across Cape Town but also marked the beginning of a year-long celebration of our 185th birthday. As the final moments of the show wrapped up and the school slowly returned to its academic rhythm, one thing was clear: this milestone year had begun with pride, joy and tremendous momentum.
