We emphasize a strong dress code both on and off the field, nurturing the spirit of Supera Moras (overcoming difficulties) among our learners. Good sportsmanship is a cornerstone of our cricketing ethos, and we prioritize dedicated coaching to support the development of each player’s skills and well-being.
Athletics
Every year a different boy school gets to host the Pentangular. In term 4 of every year, we also compete in the Paarl Boys Night Athletic meeting. This is a unique event where we can only register 22 athletes.
CHESS
Wynberg Boys’ Junior School boasts a vibrant Chess club that fosters a love for the game among learners. The club is structured into two groups: a junior group for Grades 3 and 4 that meets on Tuesday afternoons, and a senior group for Grades 5 to 7 that practices on Thursdays.
The most skilled players from the Chess team compete in matches on Friday afternoons during the winter terms. Under the guidance of a dedicated coach, the team also engages in an online Chess program through the African Chess Lounge, enhancing their skills and strategies.
This program not only nurtures competitive play but also promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and sportsmanship among the boys, making Chess an enriching part of their school experience.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Cross Country at Wynberg is an inclusive and dynamic program open to learners from Grade One. With early morning practices on Mondays and Wednesdays, learners engage in fitness and endurance training, including an exciting outrun around the Wynberg Boys’ High School fields on Wednesdays.
Throughout the winter months, the team competes in inter-school races every Friday, culminating in the Pentangular event between the boys’ schools at the end of Term 3. Additionally, an inter-house cross-country race allows participants to earn points for their respective schoolhouses, fostering a spirit of competition and camaraderie.
This program is designed not only for aspiring runners but also for boys looking to enhance their fitness for other sports. Cross Country promotes physical well-being, teamwork, and a love for running, making it a valuable experience for all participants.
HOCKEY
Hockey at Wynberg is flourishing as a key A-category winter sport, with 20 teams competing in the weekly school league across all age groups: U9, U10, U11, U12, and U13, with four teams per age group. The program features a dedicated team of skilled coaches who undergo continuous training to enhance their effectiveness.
Starting from Grade R, hockey is introduced as an optional extracurricular activity. Learners in Grades 1 and 2 learn the basics through a sport skills program, while U8s benefit from two dedicated hockey skills sessions each week.
Wynberg boasts two astroturf fields, enabling flexible morning and afternoon practice sessions, with matches held both at home and away. Throughout the season, the school participates in various festivals and tournaments, including the prestigious annual King Edwards Primary School Hockey Festival in Johannesburg for the U13A team. The program also highlights traditional fixtures, such as the annual match against Grey Junior School from Gqeberha.
While success is celebrated, the primary focus is on personal development. Wynberg hockey emphasises teamwork, communication, confidence, discipline, and respect, aligning with the school’s broader ethos of nurturing the whole child across sports, service, culture, and academics.
RUGBY
Rugby at Wynberg is a vibrant part of the school’s winter sports program, showcasing a strong commitment to developing young players. With eighteen teams competing across various age groups, including five U9 teams and three each for U10 & U12, and four U11 & U13, there’s a robust structure in place. The coaching staff, made up of BokSmart accredited individuals, includes both Old Boys and current Varsity Cup players, ensuring that the boys receive high-quality instruction.
The Foundation Phase, featuring the U7 and U8 groups, is thriving, with over fifty boys participating in each. These younger teams benefit from the dedication of Foundation Phase teachers and enthusiastic parent volunteers.
Highlighting the program’s competitive spirit, the U13A team participates annually in the Durban Prep National Rugby Festival, while various friendly matches are hosted with schools from across South Africa. End-of-season 7-a-side festivals further enrich the experience for the boys, fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship.
At Wynberg, the emphasis is on enjoyment and team spirit, with a focus on teaching the fundamentals of rugby. The philosophy is clear: while winning is nice, it’s the development of character and sportsmanship that truly matters. All matches are played on Saturday mornings, reinforcing a sense of tradition and community.
SQUASH
Squash at Wynberg Boys’ Junior School has gained significant competitiveness and is recognised as an A-category winter sport. The program caters to players from U10 to U13, with two teams competing in league matches during Terms 2 and 3. A highlight of the season is the annual traditional fixture against Grey Junior School from Gqeberha, where the Top 8 players showcase their skills.
The focus of the squash program is on fostering growth and enthusiasm for the sport, especially during the summer terms. With four squash courts available on the Wynberg Campus, learners have ample opportunity to practice and hone their skills. Matches are scheduled for Fridays throughout the winter, with both home and away games.
Participants are encouraged to take part in various tournaments organized by Western Province Youth Squash, and the program has produced numerous provincial representatives at the U11 and U13 levels. This commitment to development not only enhances competitiveness but also instils a lifelong love for the game.
SWIMMING
Swimming at Wynberg Boys’ Junior School has flourished, particularly with the recent enhancements to the Aquatic Centre in 2021. The addition of a beautiful 25m heated swimming pool and a lap pool has created an excellent environment for training and competition. The program caters to learners from Grade R to Grade 7, promoting skills development and water safety.
A dedicated team of enthusiastic swimming coaches works to build the boys’ confidence and foster a love for the water. In Terms 1 and 4, learners have the opportunity to compete against other local schools in swimming galas, showcasing their progress and teamwork.
The primary focus of the swimming program is to ensure that as many boys as possible become water-safe and feel confident in their abilities. This approach not only promotes enjoyment of the sport but also instills essential life skills that will benefit the boys both in and out of the pool
TENNIS
Tennis at Wynberg Boys’ Junior School may be one of the smaller sports, but it boasts a talented group of players. The program offers private tennis lessons for boys in Grades R to 3, laying the groundwork for skill development. Starting in Grade 4, learners can join a developmental tennis program, where they enhance their skills, practice serves and play both singles and doubles matches.
External coaches lead the lessons, ensuring high-quality instruction, while each team is supported by a dedicated teacher. The U11 teams compete in doubles matches on Thursday afternoons, while the U13 teams engage in either singles or doubles matches on Friday afternoons.
This structure not only fosters individual improvement but also encourages teamwork and sportsmanship, preparing players to represent Wynberg proudly in their respective age groups.
WATER POLO
Water polo at Wynberg Boys’ Junior School has experienced significant growth in recent years, thanks to the upgrade of the pool facilities. The program begins at the U8 level and includes both A and B teams up to U13.
A highlight for the U13A team is their annual participation at the Grey Junior National Water Polo Tournament in Gqeberha. The primary focus of the program is to promote the sport, leveraging the beautiful facilities while ensuring that all coaches are qualified and passionate about water polo.
