At the beginning of 2016 I informed you that we would require your help during this year to manage some of the events planned to celebrate our 175th anniversary. One such event will be taking place in the beginning of next term. Planning and preparations are well underway and parent volunteers will soon be mobilised through our PTA and Supporters Club. Your Class Reps will be in touch soon and we will be circulating more information to all parents at the start of next term. Meanwhile, please let us know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions as these are always useful and welcome.
WHAT IS THE 175 WINTER SPORTS FESTIVAL?
The festival forms part of our 175th anniversary celebrations and incorporates Hockey and Rugby over the period 21-23 July 2016. This promises to be a showcase of some of the best school boy sport at this level. The festival will be marketed to all the schools in the area and we would want every Wynberg boy to be part of the celebration.
WHERE WILL IT TAKE PLACE?
The festival will be hosted on our school grounds with hockey being played on the Astroturf and rugby matches on the Cawood Field.
WHO WILL PARTICIPATE?
The festival participants are boys’ schools with whom we have long standing relationships. These are SACS, Rondebosch, Bishops and WPPS from Cape Town, and Grey, Durban Prep, Merchiston, Queens and Selbourne. All of these schools are bringing their U13A Rugby teams and 8 will bring U13A Hockey teams. We will make up Invitational teams to compete in the available slots for Hockey. These will be teams comprising players from the Cape Town boys’ schools.
On the Saturday morning we will host a “mini rugby” festival, giving our U7 and U8 boys the opportunity to participate.
WHERE WILL THE VISITING BOYS STAY?
We have an agreement with each of the Cape Town Boys’ Schools to host one of our visiting schools. Wynberg will thus only host one school, Merchiston from Pietermaritzburg, for 3, possibly 4 nights from Wednesday 20 July to Saturday 23 July. This would be a total of 32 boys. Staff from the schools will book themselves into accommodation in the area. We have already chatted with some parents who are able to welcome visiting boys into their homes during the Festival, and of course, we would like to include all Wynberg Families who are able to provide hospitality. If your home is able to take in a visitor during the Festival, please do contact us [email@example.com] before 25 June 2016.
HOW WILL WE FEED THEM?
Hosting families will provide boys with breakfast and supper.
We are in an extremely fortunate position to have Pick n Pay on board as a major partner and they have agreed to supply us with what we require to cater for all the boys while at the festival. Participants will be given vouchers which they will exchange for meals. Pick ‘n Pay will provide products for us to sell to spectators as well. The products are though supplied raw and we will have to prepare it.
HOW CAN WE HELP?
We require help from our parents and community to perform a multitude of tasks. These include: access control, braaiing, running food stalls, assisting at kiddies corner, first aid etc. Essentially we will require approximately 400 parents to each commit to a 2 hour shift to make a success of this festival.
Within the next few days we will begin an extensive marketing campaign, please see our website as well as our various social media channels.
